Escalation

Where to file a credit report dispute — and where not to

Most disputes do not fail because the letter is badly written. They fail because it goes to the wrong office: one that cannot act on a single case, one that routes complaints away from the attorney general, or one that will not take a mailed letter.

Routing table for all 50 states + DC. Every row was checked against that office’s own official page on 7 October 2026 and links to its source. 50 rows matched what the office prints; 1 could not be reached.

The escalation ladder, in order

Every step is free. Do them in this order. A later complaint filed while an earlier one is still open is usually treated as premature.

1

Dispute the bureau — Equifax, Experian, TransUnion

By mail, or through each bureau’s own free online portal. A bureau has 30 days from the day it receives your dispute to finish the check, plus up to 15 more days if you send extra evidence (15 U.S.C. §1681i(a)(1)). See the verified bureau addresses.

2

Ask the bureau how it verified the item

Once the bureau says the check is finished, you can ask how it verified the item: the method used, the name and address of the company it contacted, and that company’s phone number if there is one. The bureau must reply within 15 days of your request (15 U.S.C. §1681i(a)(7)). This asks for information. It does not delete anything.

3

Dispute the company that reported it

Not the bureau — the creditor or collection agency that supplied the information, at the address printed on your credit report. This step is free, and it can be quicker than going through the bureau, but most people skip it.

4

Second dispute, with new information

Send a second dispute only if you have something new to add, such as a document you did not send the first time. If a bureau decides your new dispute repeats one you already sent, or that you gave it too little to work with, it may treat the dispute as frivolous and stop investigating. It then has to tell you within 5 business days of that decision, and say what it needs (15 U.S.C. §1681i(a)(3)).

5

File with the CFPB — but only after the above

The CFPB says the law requires you to dispute with the bureau first (15 U.S.C. §1681i(a) and (e)). When you file, you must confirm that your bureau dispute is more than 45 days old, or that it is no longer open. File too early and the CFPB may close your complaint without action. Paper complaints: P.O. Box 27170, Washington, DC 20038.

6

State attorney general — know what it will actually do

Under 15 U.S.C. §1681s(c)(1) a state attorney general can sue on behalf of the people living in that state, or a state can name another office to do the same job. Enforcing the law for the state is not the same as fixing your file, and many offices say so on their own pages. Use the table below to find the right desk, then set expectations.

51-jurisdiction routing table

“Checked” means we opened that office’s own page and the row matched what it prints — it is not a guarantee that nothing has changed since. “Not the AG” means the attorney general is not where the federal USA.gov consumer page sends this state’s complaints. “No mailbox published” means the office posts no consumer mailing address, so a letter sent there may not reach anyone.

Consumer-complaint routing for credit report disputes. Each row was checked against the source it links to on 7 October 2026. Rows marked “Not the AG” point to another agency, and rows marked “No mailbox published” have no consumer mailing address.

CA California Not the AG No mailbox published California — no state intake for credit reporting

California has no state consumer office for this. The Department of Consumer Affairs states it does not handle debt collection or credit-reporting disputes, and the Attorney General's own referral table sends every financial complaint to the Dept. of Financial Protection and Innovation or the CFPB. Dispute with the bureau first, then use the CFPB.
